How to Measure a Stump for Your Quote

Lay the Tape Across the Top
Lay a tape measure flat across the top surface of the stump, running straight from one edge toward the opposite edge.
Read the Widest Point, Out to Out
Read the tape at the widest point of the stump at ground level — outside edge to outside edge, root flare included. When in doubt, measure wide: the flare is what the grinder works through.
Photo With the Tape Visible
Take one close photo from above or a shallow angle so the tape and its reading are clearly visible in the frame.

What If the Stump Has a Big Root Flare?
Old maples and oaks often widen dramatically right at the ground. Measure the widest point you can see at ground level — flare included — because that is what the grinder has to work through. If you are not sure, err wide and say so in your text; the photos let us sanity-check the number, and the quote stays firm either way.
What If I Have More Than One Stump?
Measure each stump the same way and send one photo set per stump, or one wider shot that captures the cluster. Multi-stump jobs are where the pricing works hardest for you: the inches are totaled across every stump at your chosen rate, and the whole visit shares a single $200 trip minimum. Counting every stump — including the half-rotted one behind the shed — is the cheapest time to deal with it.
